ENGAGEMENT RINGS

Two ways to begin.
One ring at the end.

Most people arrive with one of two starting points. Some already have a stone, inherited or out of a ring nobody wears, and want it in something modern. Others want the diamond and the setting together, chosen with someone who grades stones for a living.

  1. Talk about the wearer. Hand, lifestyle and what they already wear every day.
  2. Choose the stone. Yours, checked for damage first, or one from our vault.
  3. Approve a drawing and a price. Before any metal is cut.
  4. See it in wax or CAD. Where the design warrants it, so nothing surprises you.
  5. Set at our bench. By the people who valued the stone in the first place.

STYLES WE MAKE

  • Solitaire: one stone, nothing competing with it
  • Halo: small stones that make a center stone read larger
  • Three stone, including a smart use of a smaller center
  • Hidden halo and pavé bands, detail seen from the side
  • Bezel and low profile, for hands that work
  • Heirloom reproduction, rebuilt to last another fifty years

Kevin runs the store and is at the counter most days. He has graded diamonds since 1993 and is the team’s watch specialist, so a center stone he has looked at has been looked at by someone with three decades at it.

QUESTIONS SHOPPERS ASK

Engagement rings and fine jewelry, answered.

What does Maxwell Philip Fine Jewelers offer?

Maxwell Philip Fine Jewelers is the retail side of the Maxwell Philip family: engagement rings, fine jewelry, custom design, heirloom resets, restoration, repairs and written insurance appraisals. Our San Diego showroom is at 907 Sixth Avenue in the Gaslamp Quarter, inside our flagship store, San Diego Jewelry Buyers, where the same team also buys jewelry and writes collateral loans.

Can you build an engagement ring around a diamond I already own?

Yes, and it is the most common way people start with Maxwell Philip Fine Jewelers. We first check the stone for chips, earlier damage and how it will hold in a new setting, then design around what it can safely carry. Inherited diamonds and stones from rings nobody wears are welcome. If a stone is not safe to reset, we tell you before any work begins.

Do you sell loose diamonds for engagement rings?

Yes. Our San Diego team buys estate diamonds every day, so the center stone in a Maxwell Philip Fine Jewelers ring is often one we own outright rather than one we are brokering for someone else. You can compare stones in person at 907 Sixth Avenue and talk through cut, color, clarity and carat weight with a GIA-credentialed specialist before choosing.

How does the custom engagement ring process work?

A Maxwell Philip Fine Jewelers custom ring starts with a free consultation about the person who will wear it, their hand and lifestyle. Next comes the stone, yours or one we source. You approve a drawing with a quoted price before any metal is cut, then wax or CAD where the design warrants it. The ring is set at our own bench in San Diego by the people who valued the stone.

What engagement ring styles can you make?

Maxwell Philip Fine Jewelers designs solitaires, halos, three-stone rings, hidden halos and pavé bands, and bezel or low-profile settings for people who work with their hands. We also reproduce worn heirloom rings so they survive another fifty years. Bring a photo, a sketch or just an idea to our San Diego showroom and we will draw it with you.

How long does a custom engagement ring take?

It depends on the design and on whether a stone needs to be sourced. Resetting your own diamond is the quickest path; a ring designed from scratch takes longer, and finding a specific stone takes as long as finding the right one takes. Maxwell Philip Fine Jewelers gives you the timeline when we quote the ring, before you commit, not after.

How much does a custom engagement ring cost?

There is no price list at Maxwell Philip Fine Jewelers because there is no standard ring. We quote against the actual job: the stone, the metal and the bench time your design needs. You see and agree to that number on the approved drawing before any metal is cut, and the consultation itself is free with no obligation to go ahead.

Who will design and set my ring?

Our own team, at our own bench in San Diego. Maxwell Philip Fine Jewelers’ specialists include Kevin Keller (GIA Graduate Diamonds), AJ Leonard (GIA Graduate Gemologist and Graduate Jeweler) and Anthony R. Zamonis (GIA Graduate Gemologist), supported by bench jewelers, diamond setters and watchmakers. The people who examine your stone are the people who know what a setting can take.

Can you redesign or repair jewelry I already own?

Yes. Maxwell Philip Fine Jewelers repurposes heirlooms, for example moving a grandmother’s stone into a ring someone will actually wear, and restores worn prongs, thinned shanks and damaged engraving. Everyday repairs include ring sizing, retipping, soldering, stone tightening, clasp and chain work and watch bracelet links. We quote the work and the timeline before we start.

Do you provide written jewelry appraisals for insurance?

Yes. Written insurance appraisals are prepared in house at our San Diego store, with a typical turnaround of one week. Bring the jewelry, any grading reports or earlier appraisals, and your insurer’s requirements. We discuss the service and quote it before proceeding. This is separate from the free verbal evaluation we give when you are considering selling or borrowing.
